Art Education

The undergraduate concentration in Art Education at jmcomicÂþ»N is designed to prepare students to apply to the Single Subject Credential Program in Art after earning a BA, which is needed to teach art in Pre K - Grade 12 in California public schools. Anchored in the California Arts Framework for Public Schools and California Arts Standards for Public Schools, the Art Education concentration (also available as a Minor in Art Education) consists of studio, art history, and art education courses focused on content-based curriculum; teaching visual, critical, and digital literacy; skill development; theoretical understandings; historical and contemporary cross-cultural connections; early field experience; and community engagement with teachers, museums, and arts organizations.
Minor in Art Education
The Minor in Art Education includes two tracks:
Track I: Available to any majors except those in the Department of Art & Design; recommended for Liberal Studies, Multiple-Subject, or Child and Adolescent Development majors. This is primarily for students who are considering teaching all subjects in elementary classrooms or in preschools. Review this for information about Track I of the Minor.
Track II: Available only for Art majors; this is recommended for students who plan to pursue a Single Subject Credential in Art to teach art in PK-12 public schools or those interested in art education in a variety of other settings, including museums and community organizations. Review this for suggested coursework plans depending on the number of semesters you have remaining before graduation and for more info about different pathways for teaching art.
jmcomicÂþ»N’s undergraduate Art Education concentration/Minor in Art Education provides a strong foundation for pre-credential students who wish to apply to the Single Subject Credential Program in ArtÌýafter graduating, where they can pursue certification to teach art in PK-12 schools. The credential program is facilitated by jmcomicÂþ»N’s College of Education.Ìý
We have an active that participates in local/state/national art education events, and the is a mentoring community of practice that pairs beginning visual art teachers with veteran art teacher mentors for support during their first few years in the profession. Our goal is to build a community of art teachers and students for mentoring and collaboration while at jmcomicÂþ»N and beyond.
