Captions for Faculty / Staff

Per federal and state law, and jmcomicÂþ»­ policy, instructional media (e.g., videos,Ìýcaptured lectures, recorded presentations) must have captions. This includes instructional media used in classrooms, posted on websites orÌýshared in Canvas or Panopto.

Faculty:ÌýFunding is available to help faculty generate captions and transcripts forÌýinstructional media. Submit your request(s) for media captioning as soon as possible.

Staff:ÌýFor jmcomicÂþ»­N staff who do not provide classroom material, there is a cost through chargeback.Ìý For information on the chargeback, emailÌýncod@csun.edu

Relevant Accommodations

Videos are automatically captioned in Zoom, Panopto, Google Slides, PowerPoint 365, Otter.ai, YouTube, Camtasia,Ìýor any other automatic captioned programs thatÌýare computer-generated, areÌýnot 99% accurate; therefore, they are not acceptable for students that need accommodation.ÌýIf a class has a student with a relevant approved accommodation, whether the class will be taught live or feature pre-recorded videos, all instructional and public-facing videos must be captioned appropriately.

How do I caption my instructional materials?

TheÌýjmcomicÂþ»­N Universal Design CenterÌýis available to help faculty makeÌýinstructional materials accessible, including guiding faculty through theÌýself-service submission process. Faculty may also submit instructionalÌýmedia directly to theÌýNCOD: Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services.
