Student Safety Training

Scope

This page pertains solely to student safety trainings. Employees, including student assistants & HR processed volunteers, can receive comparable training through jmcomicÂþ»­ Learn byÌýemailingÌýehs@csun.edu.

Policy

In accordance with jmcomicÂþ»­ Executive order 1039, all students must be made aware of present and potential hazards in their courses, labs, research activities, shops, and campus-sponsored extracurricular activities (i.e. clubs and organizations). Students must likewise receive safety training where present or potential hazards are identified. Upon request, EH&S can assist departments in conducting hazard assessments to determine the hazards and appropriate training(s). Contact EH&S atÌýehs@csun.eduÌýfor more information.Ìý

Record Retention

Student training must be documented and training records must be maintained by the hosting department or college as determined by the Dean or Department Head. Training records shall be maintained for a period of three (3) years with the exception of hazardous waste training which shall be maintained for three (3) years following the student's departure from campus.

Responsibilities

Training students is the responsibility of the departments or colleges, and may be supplemented by materials provided by EH&S. Training materials developed by faculty members or college/department staff should be reviewed by EH&S prior to implementation to ensure coherence with regulatory standards. Tracking and monitoring student training is the responsibility of the department/college to ensure completion of training in a reasonable timeframe.Ìý

Lab Safety Training

Pertinent to common hazards associated with working in a laboratory environment.

Access to the training is available to jmcomicÂþ»­, Northridge students who are active and enrolled in the current academic semester session.

Required for all labs:

  • Initial training only:
    • ÌýÌý-Ìývalid for one (1) year.

Ìý

  • Annual refresher training:
    • Ìý-Ìýmust be taken annually after one (1) yr. from initially completing the jmcomicÂþ»­-LABORATORY SAFETY FUNDAMENTALS training.

Additional Trainings Based on Lab or Activity Type:

Heat Illness

  • Ìý(Required for courses or activities where high heat exposure is a possibility, e.g., outdoor work during high temperatures, field work, etc...)

Pertinent to spaces with power tools, hand tools, welding or chemicals.

Access to the training is available to jmcomicÂþ»­, Northridge students who are active and enrolled in the current academic semester session.
